True Love did not always run smooth....but it was Mary, Mary...............

We have seen the links by marriage of some of the old Nimity families. Added to the harsh burdens and sacrifices of life in the early days, some fathers actually made life more difficult for their daughters. An early instance is in 1870 when Morgan Thornton cut his daughter Mary (my paternal great grandmother) out of his will. Whether it was because he did not approve of her marriage to John Burke some 13 years earlier, we may never know for sure but according to documents from the Mitchell Library, assume that was the case.

Sixty or so years later, we have another Mary Burke (my mother) whose father (Harry Pilley) refused for many years to give her permission to marry her John Burke (my father). Mary Pilley and John (Jack) had decided very early in the piece (the year she was Queen of Nimmitabel in 1924, aged 14) that they would marry as soon as Mary was old enough. About six years passed and when Mary was around 20, with her mother Hilda as an ally, again asked her father for his blessing for her to marry Jack who, at the time was working for Harry in his general store. Time passed but Harry refused to discuss the matter. Not wanting to defy Harry but knowing they must finally take matters into their own hands, Jack and Mary eloped to Bombala where they were married by Fr. McGee at St Mary's Church on 26 April 1933. Mary was 22 and Jack 27

.. They returned to Nimity and, as the story goes, Mary continued to live with her parents until Jack finished building their matrimonial home.

Harry would not speak to his daughter Mary for years and refused to acknowledge Jack as his son-in-law (although he was later often caught by his wife Hilda playing 'coochie-coo' with then baby Cornelius (Neil) - cute little fella he must have been).

Jack and Mary in 1936 moved away from Nimmitabel to Goulburn and then to Orange. By then another little babe (Noel) had arrived. Sometime around 1938, Harry arrived in Orange unannounced - straight from the midnight train.

Mary was in somewhat of a quandary whether to welcome her Dad to her home as she wanted to do, or wait to see Jack's reaction to this man who had not wanted him to marry his darling daughter. Anyone who knew Jack Burke would know the outcome; he welcomed his father-in-law Harry, without hesitation! From that time Jack and Harry developed a friendship which lasted many years.

The moral to this story must be that if you have a daughter called Mary, it does no good to try to change her mind - she will win out in the end !

It would be good to know that the previous Mary and her John Burke also made peace with her father, Morgan Thornton. Does anyone know?

Notes: George Bales was one of the village's best known trout fisherman with more than 35 years of successful fishing. The Tudor Inn used to have some of the finest mounted fish ever taken from NSW Rivers. A rainbow trout weighing 13lb 2ozs caught 5 miles from town was displayed in Russ Burns Hotel (later known as The Tudor Inn). He was always sought out as a guide to the many anglers who visited the district. During the depression he tracked everywhere over the Nimmitabel plains for rabbits. Foxes and kangaroo skins were also made into lovely rugs for their beds. Unfortunately whilst employed at Rock Flat mine, he was involved in a delayed gelignite explosion, which resulted in the death of his brother-in-law Frank Burke, and he himself was transported to Sydney for emergency surgery on his head. This accident occurred on 1-5-1953, and most people thought that he never fully recovered from this accident.

Notes: Notes: Affectionately remembered by his 10 great grandchildren as "Big Pa".
Francis was a proud man. He was proud to have won the hand of the love of his life, the beautiful Carmel Cummins. He was proud to be the father of 6 children, grandfather to 16 and great grandfather to 10.
A hard working man Francis lead by example, through diligence and hard work he set an example for his family based on a no nonsense attitude towards church, work, sport, and of cause family. This example can be seen at work in those left behind in the wake of his passing. Although our hearts yern for his company and his love we have an example to carry us on in our lives and within our families.
Francis, like most Buckley men, enjoyed a good drink and a dance. Something he passed on to his children and grandchildren. I have many a fond memory of Pa glowing with pride as he danced with his children, be it a wedding or just a family get together.
Francis was also a keen footballer in his younger days and an accomplished bowler in retirement. And was always ready to talk.
At work on the State Railway he was well renowned as a fearsome sight for many a call boy and a true champion for the common worker. As union delegate he took on the big blokes in a fight for what he believed the right of every man, and his growing family, the right to a fair go, a fair pay, and fair conditions.
A man not to complain about his situation, he was in poor health in his last days when he decided to retire to his prized arm chair for that one last nap.
When he reached those pearly gates the pride on his face would have told a thousand words and painted as many pictures. While his voice said "Howdy Carmmie" his thoughts would be saying "That's right boys, she's with me"
From the eye of a grandson.
