John Francis Lawless (Last changed Sunday May 20, 2012) The first John Francis Lawless The first John Francis Lawless to arrive in Australia was convicted of the theft of a pair of silver candlesticks in County Meath, Ireland. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation. (There seems to have been an inordinate number of people convicted of the theft of silver candlesticks) He was transported on the "Busarah Merchant' ", arriving on our God forsaken shores on 14-12-1831. He was described as follows; 5'5" tall, with fair hair, grey eyes, ruddy complexion but fair & freckled, with pock-marks. He had "J L" on his left arm, was single & could read & write. He had served 2 years as a shoemaker at the time of his arrest. He had served 9 months of his 7 years sentence at the time of his arrival. After being allocated to someone in Sydney, he appears to have spent some time at Patterson (Hunter Valley) working for the Police Force. There is a rumor of theft of a sheep or horse but I have not checked this out yet. He next appears in the Monaro district on the property "One Tree Hill Station", Nimmitabell. This is the address given on the birth registration of his son, John Francis Lawless. John Francis Lawless the 1st married Sophia Thompson, a daughter of William Thompson (a convict) & Sophia Chipp. Sophia was the daughter of Thomas Chipp, a First Fleet Marine, & Jane Langley, a First Fleet Convict. There is a large Family History book titled; " A New Beginning, a Story of Three First Fleeters and their Descendants. For information regarding this book contact Tom Silk at <thsilk@bigpond.com.au> I believe there are no copies left at the moment but more may be printed. Descendants of John Francis Lawless (2nd) The John Francis Lawless who was born in the Nimmitybelle district on 12-07-1843, married Mary Elizabeth Tasker at the C of E "The Anglican Church of St Mary the Virgin, Gegedzrick" on 25-12-1864. (NOTE: This church is still in use today) John & Mary produced 8 children, of whom the last was Charles Henry Lawless. My mother was Sylvia Grace Lawless, the second child of Charley Lawless & Martha (nee Newlyn). My wife found that the Minister Edward Gifford-Pryce married my G G Grandparents 11-6-1848 and her own GG Grandparents on 2-8-1848. Both these sets of G-G-G's are on the female side. We also found that the handwritten record of Gifford-Pryce has these 2 marriages recorded consecutively, some 6 weeks apart!
We have seen a copy of the Bombala Primary School record showing the enrolment of Charles Henry in first grade. His enrolment was late in the year & he doesn't appear to have enrolled again. Only one of his siblings enrolled in two years. At one stage of their lives, the family of Charles Henry Lawless lived in Nimmitybelle, according to my mother Sylvia Grace Lawless. Unfortunately, I have no idea at what age she lived there. They also lived in Pambula, Bega, Nowra & Milton.
