THE MUDIE FAMILY
Prepared by Bev Moore <bevm-at-netspace.net.au>

A BRIEF OUTLINE:

John Mudie, convict, arrived in NSW aboard the Susan in February 1836. He had been tried at the Glasgow Court of Judiciary on 8 January 1835 and found guilty of housebreaking. He received a seven year sentence.

John was the son of James Mudie and Margaret Smith, born in the Parish of Redgorton, County of Perth, in 1795.

On the 17 December 1815 he married Helen Gray in the Parish of Lanark, County of Lanark.

He was granted his Ticket of Leave in 1840 at Queanbeyan and his Certificate of Freedom in 1843.

In 1853 (and probably prior to that date) he was employed as an overseer by Dr James Binnie on a property known as Burrangandra on the Monaro. This property was in the vicinity of Nimmitabel.

In 1853, his only surviving child, a son, Alexander Mudie, migrated to NSW with his wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Sime and their children. The family were accompanied by John’s wife, Helen, then aged 65. They arrived on the Telegraph 18 September 1853.

John paid for the family to come to NSW under the Remittance Scheme.

Alexander had two uncles in the Colony, Robert and George Mudie who were both established in Sydney.

Members of the family, at varying times worked on Bibbenluke Station. John Senior was at Tea Pot Gully when he died on 12 March 1874. His occupation was Shepherd.

Helen died 8 August 1867 also at Tea Pot Gully, her occupation was Hut Keeper. Both were buried at Mt Cooper Cemetery.

Three places bear the name Mudie (often Moodie) on Monaro – a creek, named Moodie’s Creek runs into Bobundarra or Curry Flat Creek; on the McLaughlan River, near the junction with Tea Pot Creek is a crossing known as Moodie’s Crossing and in the vicinity of Tea Pot Hill is a hill known as Moodie’s Hill.

When Alexander and Elizabeth arrived in NSW, they had five children. A further four were born after their arrival.

Alexander Mudie was employed as a Shepherd on Bibbenluke Station. Some time was spent at Telegraph Station. He died 3 May 1899 having been predeceased by Elizabeth on 21 June 1879. They too were buried at Mt Cooper Cemetery.
