Burial entry for Thomas Plunkett - 1854 |
George Plunkett aged 16 arrived in 1823 NSW with his parents Thomas & Susannah. Thomas was in the army and became the Overseer of the Asylum (convict) in Parramatta.
George became a schoolmaster of the Castle Hill school. Later when the Government became involved in schooling he left it to his co-teacher and went down to Cooma.
I have been unable to establish his exact location but as he was a schoolmaster at Castle Hill it is possible he became a tutor to a well-to-do family. I could find nothing on a school in this area during this period.
My ggg Thomas Scott Plunkett was born 9 July 1858 in Nimitabel (spelling on cert)
With his father George giving his occupation as school master and residence as Glen Bog.
Georges younger brother Edward also came to Cooma. He had married Susanna Thompson in 1841 in Forbes .They were resident in Nimmitabel in 1857 when their daughter Pheobe son William 1859 and John 1861 were born. An elder daughter Susanna married David Scott in Jan 1858 Glen Bog Nimmitabel .Another daughter Mary Jane married Cyrus Huxley Oct 1857 Christ's Church Cooma.
Both families were in Forbes by 1862c
Both George and Edward died in Forbes with George being in the Forbes Cemetery and Edward thought to lie in the older cemetery just outside the town.
Thomas Scott Plunkett went over to the Kalgoolie mines in W.A., and later established “Plunkett Homes”
