David Williams was the son of John Williams and Sarah Nash and was born in 1836 at his parents' squattage south of Queanbeyan. A few years later David relocated with his family to the Monaro district, settling initially near Nimmitabel and later at the "Groses Plain" cattle run south-west of Jindabyne.
In 1857 David married Mary Ann Ward (1836-1924), the daughter of Cooma innkeeper Joseph Ward and his wife Catherine Hartigan. Both Joseph and Catherine were colonial-born and were also early settlers in the Monaro district. In 1860 David and his brother-in-law Joseph Ward junior jointly acquired the lease to the "Burrow" run from Joseph Ward senior, which they held until the mid-1860's. During this period, David also managed the "Australian Arms" hotel in Cooma.
David turned to farming in the mid-1860's, acquiring consecutive selections on the "Burrow" run however both proved unsuccessful. In 1877 David selected land at Byadbo however this selection also met with complications. In 1882 David's son James selected land at Ingebyra on which David and his family settled. They remained there until the early 1900's when they retired to live at "Moonbar". David died in 1906 and Mary Ann in 1923.
