William Patterson

William Patterson was born c.1809 in Ayr, Scotland, son of Andrew and Mary Patterson (nee Miller). In 1825 he was apprenticed for five years to Alexander Reid, a china and glass dealer of Newcastle-on-Tyne. In 1836 he married Mary Ann Robson and a year later the couple emigrated to Australia. The shipping list shows they could both read and write. William's occupation was Sawyer and Many Ann worked as a Houseservant. In 1839 he was working at 'Ravenswood", Bungonia and in 1841 was listed as overseer. They later moved to Monaro where William was employed as an overseer by William Bradley on Bullenamang and Dangelong. In later years they were living in the Jindabyne area, at the time of his death, in 1891, William was living at Greenland. Mary Ann then lived with her daughter Mary Ann Adams at Jindabyne until her death in 1910 aged 95 years.
