Thomas James Potter
Cooma c1870

The POTTERs were a Huguenot family who originally settled as farmers at Kelso, near Bathurst, in the1840s.

It is not clear what the son of this family, Thomas James Potter,  did at Cooma, though we have a photo of him c1870 in what appears to be a militia uniform.

While in Cooma he married Francis Spencer Wheatland at St Pauls Church on 1 Dec 1870.

There is a family tradition that at one time they had Kate, the sister of Ned Kelly, employed as their housemaid.

Every year Thomas put on fete for the local residents. There is a poem called "The Potter Annual Fete" which was published in the Monaro Mercury (I do not have the date).

Eventually they moved to Melbourne where Thomas set up a saddlery.
