Mercury” records death of Matthew Shanley,Caddigat, Adaminaby, son of
James Shanley, a well known grazier of the early days of district
settlement. Matthew was 78 years of age and was born at Caddigat, and
lived there all his life. He was a lover of horses and bred several which
he raced himself. He was fond of the Turf , and always sent his horses out
to win. Caddigat was a valuable state (sic) , and he divided (it) up
amongst his family prior to his death. He leaves 5 sons – Charles , James,
William, Henry , and Arthur , and , daughters Mesdames James Johnson , W.
Whittaker , E. Crowe , P. Delaney , and E. Eccleston. .His wife died 3rd
Jan . last year .(1922) . Mrs. Cook of Adaminaby is a sister , and he also
leaves 34 grandchildren . At the time of his death he was the oldest
native on Monaro . (He was a great supporter of the Turf at all Monaro
race meetings , and surrounding districts , and a race meeting did not
seem complete without him . He always had two or more entrants , and
always “tryers” . He was noted in that he never indulged in strong drink
but always called for “gingerwine” . Following the custom of his day he
wore a full beard . )
