2 NOTE The Big Lookout Frank Allen says:John Murphy born at Epsom, England, came to Australia in 1840. After coming to Monaro, he acquired "Glenbog", on which he ran 1000 head of cattle. Records show that he owned this property in 1864. Afterwards, he selected land on Bibbenluke and Burnima Stations. He built his homenear Bibbenluke village and called the property "Broadview". He also bought the first portion of land sold at Bibbenluke village. John Murphy was the member of Parliament for Monaro from 1877 to 1880. He is reputed to have opened the first store in Bibbenluke (on his selection onBurnima Station). John Murphy also owned the land on which Bombala Court House is built. It is said he laid the foundation stone of this building. He married Mrs Mary Albon (nee Thomas) in 1855. They had fourdaughters and two sons, Edgar and Coulson. Coulson Murphy was the first shire president of Bibbenluke Shire Council, and was the father of Mr Coulson Murphy Junior of Bombala. John Murphy was a member of the first Local School Board at Bibbenluke. Their religion was Episcopalian.
At page 30 frank Allen says:
Probably John Murphy's greatest triumph was his election to Parliament. Though bitterly opposed by the squatters, he was elected, and the land settlement question. He was a rare character, with but little capital, he stood up to, and succeeded against the most powerful in the land. John selected one other portion of land. This was part of Burnima, and as Burnima at that time was not strongly held he encountered little opposition. This area now forms part of the property of Mr Peter Smith, it is still known as the Murphy Paddock.

"Word came through yesterday that Mr James Thomas had died that morning at his home at Chatswood. Mr Thomas was a native of Pembrokeshire, Wales, and was 86 years of age. He came to Australia with his parents when quite a boy, and the family arrived on Monaro shortly after, in the days when bullock drays were the main mode of conveyance. In later years Mr Thomas purchased the "Mona" property, near Bombala, and "MooreSprings" near Bibbenluke, and on the latter property he carried on grazing pursuits until he was compelled b y failing health to retire. Helived in Bombala for some time before moving to Chatswood. His deathat the great age of 86 years draws the curtain on deeds well done. A widow, two daughters and five sons mourn their loss. Mrs Cooks of thistown is a sister, and Mr J M Thomas of Bibbenluke a brother.
