OBITUARY
DOUGALD McDONALD
A life-long resident and native of Nimmitabel, Mr. Dougald McDonald, passed away at his home, Highland Glen," on Wednesday, 1st inst., after about a month's serious illness.
Deep regret was felt in this locality when the sad news became known, the late Mr McDonald being one of the "whitest" men on Monaro: he spent the whole of his 74 years at Nimmitabel, living a clean, honorable life and enjoying a record of unblemished character. He was of a sympathetic and charitable disposition, his word was his bond, and he was respected and beloved by all who came in contact with him.
In his younger days he took a great interest in all branches of sport and excelled in cricket: he was a member of the district's first cricket team and, as an opening batsman, was always a source of annoyance to the bowlers, on many occasions defying them to the end of the innings, having carried his bat right through.
He also took a keen interest in the affairs of the town, and was on the first committee of the Nimmitabel A & P. Association (he was elected year after year to this position until only three or four years ago when he considered that his age was against him in taking such an active part). Mr McDonald was wrapped up in the local show and he and the members of his family were large exhibitors, winning a great number of prizes. He grew a large quantity of produce on his farm and, during the construction of the railway from Cooma to Nimmitabel 1910 - 1912 supplied the contractors, Messrs Hendrickson and Knutson, with practically the whole of their fodder requirements.
At the various dances in the olden days, Mr. McDonald was a prominent figure - he was Nimmitabel's first Master of Ceremonies. In those days a Ball would not be considered a success without Dougald as M.C.
Mr. McDonald was born at Square Range, Nimmitabel, in the year 1853, being the youngest son of the late Mr. & Mrs McDonald (Marcella & Donald) of "Glenfinnan" Nimmitabel. Besides a widow, he leaves three daughters and four sons (Miss Jessie McDonald and Mrs Keogh, Nimmitabel: Mrs Warren, Croydon. Roderick, Barmedman: Donald and James, Nimmitabel: and Percy, Wingen one sister (Mrs. A Rankin, Kyogle) and ten grandchildren to mourn their loss. He was attended during his illness by Rev. Father Roche and the Sister of St. Joseph.
The remains were conveyed to St. Andrew's R.C. Church on the Wednesday and the funeral, which was largely attended, took place at 2 o'clock on the Thursday afternoon, Dean Norris, an old friend of deceased, officiating.
Beautiful wreaths were placed on the grave by the following:- Mr. and Mrs Gait and Family, All at Erindale, Mr and Mrs O.E. Silk, Mr and Mrs Jardine and Family, Mr. D. Driscoll and Family, All at Lake View, Jack and Is, Mrs. S. Caldwell, Mr and Mrs Alf James, Rod, Elva and Family.. Jack, May and Family *Maggie.. ... Tindall Family.
