JOHN THOMAS3 MORTLOCK (THOMAS2, WILLIAM1) was born 18 December 1853 in Majors Creek, reg. Braidwood, NSW, and died 5 November 1906 in Billilingra, Bredbro, reg. Cooma, NSW.  He married MARY PEGRAM 22 May 1873 in C of E, Black Springs, Billilingra, reg. Cooma, NSW, daughter of JOHN PEGRAM and ELIZA NORTHROP.  She was born 5 May 1854 in Haslingfield, Cambridgeshire, England, and died 3 May 1938 in Yass, NSW.

Occupation*: John Thomas Mortlock was a Laborer on 22 May 1873 at Monaro, New South Wales. 

John Thomas started work as a Farm Hand at "Billilingra" station working for John Cosgrove. He later purchased land in that area, farming and transporting wool for woolgrowers. John purchased 120 acres of land at Billilingra, 2 acres at Bredbo and leased 250 acres at Bredbo. He carried wool for the farmers between Monaro and Eden for export to England.  The main occupations of John Thomas Mortlock were as a farmhand, farmer and carrier at Billilingra.

As briefly reported by us last week, Mr. John Thomas Mortlock of Billylingra, died on Month, 5th instant, from an incurable complaint. Deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mortlock, and was born at Major's Creek. He had carried on farming and grazing pursuits in the Monaro district for many years, and met with success. Deceased had been ailing for about six months and was under the care of Dr. Paton in the Cooma Hospital for a month. He afterwards went to Summer Hill, and was there a patient in Dr. Hinder's private hospital for a fortnight, where it was found that the case was past medical skill. They’re being nothing that could be done for him he returned home about a fortnight ago, and gradually sank, passing away on the day mentioned above.

Deceased who was 53 years of age, was married in 1873 at Black Springs, Billylingra, to Miss Mary Pegram, eldest daughter of Eliza and the late John Pegram of Billylingra, and besides his wife, leaves a family of seven sons and six daughters to mourn his loss. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the Bredbo cemetery; the cortege was of great length, many friends from Cooma and other places being present. Numerous wreaths and floral tributes were received.

John Thomas Mortlock is buried in Grave 56, Bredbo Cemetery next to his wife Mary and near his mother Kitty/Catherine His headstone reads; In Loving Remembrance - John Thomas Mortlock - Died November 1906 - Father is gone but not forgotten - Nor is the Good advice he gave, Sweetest thoughts shall ever Linger around our Darling fathers Grave - Also his loving wife Mary - Died May 3rd 1938 - Aged 84 years - At Rest. 

 Mary Pegram arrived in Australia on the 27th May 1855 on the 'Constitution' with her parents. The ship was quarantined due to smallpox, typhus and brain fever, until 13th July 1855.

When her husband died, Mary raised her own children and her daughter, Catherine's 3 children, after Catherine died in 1909. When she was older she moved to Yass to live with her daughter Eliza.  Obituary - The death occurred in the District Hospital on Tuesday afternoon last of Mrs. Mary Mortlock, aged 84 years, despite her age, deceased had enjoyed excellent health until about three months prior to her death.

Formerly Miss Mary Pegram a native of Gloucestershire, England, deceased came to Australia when only a few months old and spent the early years of her life at Billilingra station. 

 After her marriage to Mr. John Thomas Mortlock in 1873 she lived at Bredbo until about a year ago, when she came to Yass to take up residence with her daughter, Mrs. J. Slattery, of Rossi Street.

Mrs. Mortlock was predeceased by her husband, two sons and one daughter and is survived by five sons: - John (Bethangra Vic), Arthur (Jerangle), Richard (Bredbo), Aleck (Captain's Flat) and Henry (Goulburn), also five daughters, Mrs. Slattery (Yass), Mrs. Suttor (Bega), Mrs. Carpenter (Lakemba), Mrs. Beryl- (Should Be Berrell) (Goulburn) and Mrs. Huggett (Marrickville). 108 grandchildren also survive.  

The remains were conveyed to Bredbo this morning where they will be interred in the Church of England portion of the Bredbo Cemetery.
